  • Let them know you are disappointed for them when they lose or make a mistake, but not in them.
  • Remind them they don’t have to “pay you back.” You are investing time and money into their experience, not for a particular outcome.
  • Avoid the dreaded “car ride home” conversation, and
  • Treat them the same after both wins and losses. Don’t let your affection be influenced by outcomes.

In these ways you will show your children unconditional love and acceptance that decreases the pressure they can feel to please you.
